As we continue to experience the unraveling of life into what often feels chaotic, uncertain, or deeply broken Christians understand that this is not a random sequence of events leading nowhere. Scripture tells us that we are heading toward a decisive, glorious conclusion: the second coming of Jesus.

Pastor Kerry Decker of Compass Christian Church seeks to shed light to key topics within the Christian faith such as the second coming of Jesus. He developed the Foundations materials to help people establish a firm foundation within the Christian faith. As a life coach, author, and apologist, Kerry works hard to help people navigate life’s challenges and better understand God. The return of Christ is not merely a puzzle about future events. It shapes how we live, how we face fear, and how we make peace with God today. Take a moment to watch Kerry's video.

History Is God’s Story

Some people see history as a collection of disconnected events. Nations rise and fall, crises come and go, and humanity simply wanders toward an unknown future. But the Bible presents a very different picture. God is sovereign, and history is deliberately moving toward its crowning event: the second coming of Jesus.

The return of Christ is assumed throughout the New Testament, from Matthew through Revelation. Jesus taught that the Son of Man will come in glory with all His angels and will take His place on His throne. Near the end of Revelation, Jesus declares that He is coming soon and that He will bring reward according to what each person has done.

Paul also preached that God has appointed a day when He will judge the world with justice through Jesus Christ. God gave proof of this by raising Jesus from the dead. The resurrection is not only the foundation of our hope for forgiveness. It is also God’s assurance that Jesus will return and complete His work.

The second coming of Jesus is not wishful thinking, religious symbolism, or a vague hope. It is the goal toward which God is moving human history.

Has God Forgotten Us

People struggle with the second coming of Jesus in part because Scripture makes it sounds imminent. But thousands of years later Jesus' return hasn't happened yet. Peter anticipated that scoffers would ask where this promised second coming is.

God’s timing should never be confused with God’s forgetfulness. The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise. He is patient. His delay is an expression of grace because He does not desire anyone to perish, but desires all people to come to repentance.

Not everyone will accept God’s gift. Love cannot be forced, and many will reject the grace offered in Christ. Still, the heart of God is clear. He wants people to receive the sacrifice Jesus made, experience His love, and live in fellowship with Him forever.

So, the longer the wait for the second coming of Jesus is means a greater amount of time that God, in His mercy, has granted for people to come to repentance and faith.

Date-Setting and Speculation for Dummies

Christians make multiple mistakes when talking about the return of Christ. Some develop elaborate end-times charts, construct detailed scenarios, and even go as far as to make predictions about the precise date Jesus will return. History is full of books that made bold predictions and then faded away when those predictions failed.

Jesus made it very clear that no one knows the day or the hour, not even the angels in heaven, but only the Father. So, any and all predictions are wrong.

There is an important truth here concerning Jesus Himself. Christians believe Jesus is fully God and truly human. During His earthly life, He experienced genuine human realities. He was hungry, tired, born as an infant, and grew in wisdom and knowledge. He was not pretending to be human. He truly entered our human condition while remaining the divine Son of God.

We may not be able to explain every aspect of that mystery perfectly, but we do not need to get bogged down in speculation. Avoid predictions about the second coming of Jesus.

We can be confident about what Scripture clearly teaches without pretending to know details God has not revealed.

Anticipate Christ’s Return Don't Dread It

For those who know God’s grace, the second coming of Jesus is exciting, not dreadful. When Jesus returns, God will restore all things and fulfill everything He has promised. The angels said that the same Jesus who ascended into heaven will return in the same way. Revelation says every eye will see Him.

The early church expressed this hope with the word Maranatha, meaning, “Come, Lord.” That is the posture Christians are called to have. Not waiting for Jesus' return with fear but with hope.

Why, then, are some believers afraid of Jesus' return? Sometimes it is because they have heard much more about judgment than grace. When people internalize the idea that God is primarily waiting to condemn them, they may fear the return of Christ rather than long for it.

But Romans 8:1 says there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Christ’s grace is sufficient. His power is made perfect in weakness. If you stand in Christ, you do not face His return as someone awaiting condemnation. You face Him as someone who has peace with God through the Lord Jesus Christ.

Leaning on that confidence is part of building a solid Christian life.

Get Ready Because Jesus Is Coming

Jesus did not tell us when He would return, but He did tell us how to respond: be ready.

In Matthew 24, Jesus compares His coming to a thief arriving at an unexpected time. The point is not that Christ comes with evil intent. The point is surprise. If a homeowner knew exactly when a thief would arrive, he would be prepared. In the same way, because we do not know the day of Christ’s return, we must remain spiritually prepared.

Readiness is not about anxious obsession with world events or predictions. It is about living faithfully before God now. It means making peace with God through Jesus Christ, walking in obedience, serving Him wholeheartedly, and refusing to put off repentance.

  • Be prepared: Receive and trust in God’s grace through Christ.
  • Be faithful: Live each day in a way that honors the Lord.
  • Be hopeful: Remember that Christ’s return means restoration for His people.
  • Be humble: Do not claim knowledge God has not given.

One of two things will happen in your lifetime. Either you will live to see the second coming of Jesus, or you will live to see your own death. Either way being ready to meet Jesus is personal and urgent.

Hold Truth More Tightly Than Debated Details

Paul gives a beautiful description of Christ’s return in 1 Thessalonians 4. The Lord Himself will come down from heaven with a loud command, the voice of an archangel, and the trumpet call of God. The dead in Christ will rise first. Then those who remain alive will be gathered together with them to meet the Lord, and believers will be with Him forever.

Christians have held different views about how the events surrounding the second coming of Jesus will unfold. Some believe in a rapture understood as a distinct event within a larger prophetic sequence. Others understand Christ’s return as the climactic end of human history, ushering in final judgment and humanity’s eternal state.

These discussions can be meaningful, but they must not distract us from what is certain. Jesus Christ will return. Those who belong to Him will be with Him forever. The details we debate must never become more important than the truth we all must embrace.

Understand Judgment Through the Lens of Grace

The word judgment can make people fearful, and rightly so in one sense. God responds to sin with condemnation, and hell is a frightening reality for those who reject His grace. It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God while continuing to spurn the mercy He offers.

Yet hell is not the destiny of those who abide in Christ. No condemnation means exactly that: none. Salvation is secured by Jesus Christ alone. There is nothing we can do to earn it, supplement it, or add to the gift of grace.

So why are Christians judged? Paul explains that when the Lord comes, He will bring hidden things into the light and expose the motives of human hearts. Then each person will receive praise from God.

This judgment concerns rewards beyond salvation. Every Christian receives salvation because of Jesus, but believers may not receive the same degree of reward for their service to Christ. God sees sacrifices that others overlook. He sees lives invested in ministry, generosity, faithfulness, and a full-time commitment to honoring Him.

The motivation is not to earn heaven. We serve because we belong to Christ, love Christ, and want our lives to bring glory to Christ. Whatever rewards look like in eternity, the greatest joy will be this: being with the Lord forever.

Make Peace With God Today

The second coming of Jesus is a glorious hope for every Christian. God will restore what sin has broken. Jesus will reign openly. Every promise of God will be fulfilled. Those who are in Christ will finally be with Him forever.

But readiness cannot be postponed indefinitely. Christ may return in our lifetime, or our own life may end first. The wise response is to make sure you have made peace with God through the Lord Jesus Christ.

Do not let fear, uncertainty, or endless debates about future details keep you from the central issue. Christ has come, Christ has died, Christ has risen, and Christ will come again. Put your trust in Him. Stand in His grace. Live ready. And with the hopeful confidence of the early church, pray: Maranatha. Come, Lord.
