God is infinite, so there is always more to discover. You will never exhaust everything there is to know about him. But God has given us reliable ways to grow, and you can begin right where you are. Keep reading for 8 great ways to learn more about God and deepen your relationship with him.

Pastor Kerry Decker of Compass Christian Church developed the Foundations materials to help people establish a firm foundation in the Christian faith. As a life coach, author, and apologist, Kerry works to help people navigate life’s challenges and better understand God.

1: Learn More About God Through Nature

Start by paying attention to the world around you. Psalm 19:1 describes the heavens as declaring God’s glory and the skies as displaying his handiwork. Creation points beyond itself to its Creator.

Romans 1:20 describes that God’s eternal power and divine nature become evident through what he has made. Nature reveals a powerful Creator and an intricate Designer.

Simply pause and take notice. Consider what creation reveals about the One who made it.

Ask yourself, “What characteristic of God impresses me here?” As you learn more about God through nature, begin with his glory, power, and creativity. Then turn to Scripture to understand more of his character and purposes.

2: Learn More About God Through Scripture

The Bible shows God at work in human history and in individual lives. From Genesis to Revelation we can read about God guiding his people.

The same Word, recorded in the Bible’s 66 books, provides direction for us today. Psalm 119:105 compares God’s Word to a lamp illuminating our steps and a light showing the path ahead.

Read with a purpose beyond finishing a chapter. Ask:

  • What does this passage reveal about God?
  • How does he guide, correct, or care for people?
  • What questions do I need to explore further?

Take notes, ask questions, and pray for understanding.

3. Learn More About God, Look Closely at Jesus

Nature reveals God’s glory. Scripture reveals his wisdom. In Jesus Christ, we see God’s heart.

Jesus is God’s supreme revelation of himself. In John 14:9, Jesus explains that anyone who has seen him has seen the Father. John 5:19, describes that the Son does what he sees the Father doing.

Hebrews 1:3 identifies the Son as the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being. Jesus is not simply another teacher with interesting thoughts about God. He is God in the flesh.

To learn more about God, get better acquainted with Jesus. As you read about him, consider what his words, actions, and relationships reveal about the Father. Do not separate your picture of God from the person of Christ.

4: Learn More About God, Ask Honest Questions

What happens when your experience of life does not seem to match what you believe about God?

Scripture describes God as loving, good, and just. Yet life includes disappointment, heartache, and sometimes profound suffering. God may seem silent precisely when you most want to hear from him.

That tension is real. It lies behind many questions about evil, suffering, and God’s apparent hiddenness. You do not need to pretend those questions are easy.

As you learn more about God, identify what actually troubles you. Is it suffering? Unanswered prayer? A sense of distance? Bring that question into your study and prayer rather than keeping it hidden. Ask for clarification when a sermon or Bible study leaves you confused. Honest questions belong in a growing faith.

5: Learn More About God Seek A Relationship

There is a danger in studying spiritual things: we can treat God as a puzzle to solve rather than a person to love.

In John 5:39–40, Jesus confronts people who diligently examine Scripture but refuse to come to him for life. Their attention to the text has not led them to the One it reveals.

Enjoying theology, discussing difficult questions, and gathering biblical knowledge have merit. But none replaces a relationship with God.

The goal is not simply to know more facts. It is to know him. As you learn more about God, make room to respond through prayer, trust, and obedience. Let your study draw you toward Jesus rather than become a substitute for coming to him.

6: Learn More About God, Give Spiritual Growth Time

You do not grow up overnight. The same is true spiritually.

Think about a rose. You may love its fragrance and want the bloom to open, but pulling the petals apart will ruin it. Some things need time to unfold.

After more than 50 years of Christian life and ministry, Kerry continues to discover new things. That is an encouragement, not a reason to feel behind. Lifelong learning is part of knowing an infinite God.

To learn more about God steadily, keep practicing these habits:

  • Study Scripture regularly and take notes.
  • Seek clarification when something is unclear.
  • Read books that help explain the Bible.
  • Pray for understanding and remain patient.

You will grow if you do not quit. Keep your attention on the relationship you are cultivating, not merely the speed of your progress.

7: Learn More About God Alongside Other Believers

You were not meant to work through every spiritual question alone. Other believers can help you learn more about God by sharing insights gained along their own journeys.

Proverbs 27:17 compares this mutual influence to iron sharpening iron. Thoughtful conversations can sharpen your understanding, expose confusion, and encourage faithfulness.

Participate regularly in church services that emphasize worship and biblical instruction. Join a Bible study. Build friendships with people who take spiritual growth seriously. If you need an online connection, join Compass Christian Church on Sundays.

Share your thoughts and questions, but also listen. Do not underestimate the importance of praying for one another. Christian community involves more than exchanging ideas.

8: Learn More About God, Let Truth Be Your Guide

Psalm 34:8 invites us to taste and discover the Lord’s goodness. Reading and memorizing Scripture matter, but faith also involves personally trusting the God those Scriptures reveal.

There is an important caution here: a real experience is not automatically a truthful interpretation of God. Something can feel powerful and convincing without accurately reflecting his character or Word.

Evaluate your experiences by Scripture rather than reshaping Scripture around your experiences. The intensity of a feeling does not make it the final authority. The truth of God's Word is more reliable than our feelings, emotions, and perceptions.

Continue to learn more about God through creation, Scripture, Jesus, and a life of faithful response. Stay curious. Be patient. Seek him with other believers. Never stop pursing a deeper relationship and understanding of God.
