See the Holy Spirit in a New Light

The Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force or a vague feeling. He is God, present and active in the life of every Christian. Understanding who the Holy Spirit is changes how we read Scripture, pray, serve, face temptation, and grow in our relationship with Christ.
Pastor Kerry Decker of Compass Christian Church is a life coach, author, and apologist, who works hard to help people navigate life’s challenges and better understand God. His Foundations course is designed to answer questions and give believers confidence in their understanding of Christianity. And although the Holy Spirit is mysterious there is much we can understand about Him through Scripture. So let's dive in.
Recognize the Holy Spirit as a Person, Not an “It”
One of the most common mistakes Christians make is speaking of the Holy Spirit as though He were an “it.” The Holy Spirit is a person, not an impersonal energy or influence.
Jesus commanded His followers to baptize disciples in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Matthew 28:19. The Holy Spirit stands with the Father and the Son as the third person of the Trinity. He is fully God.
Acts 5:1-11 gives us another clear example. When Ananias lied about his offering, Peter told him that he had lied to the Holy Spirit. Peter then made the point unmistakable: Ananias had not merely lied to people, but to God. To lie to the Holy Spirit is to lie to God.
In Psalm 139:7, David asks where he could go from God’s Spirit or flee from God’s presence. The answer is NOWHERE. Because the Holy Spirit is omnipresent, meaning He is present everywhere. Which is a defining characteristic of God.
Scripture gives the Holy Spirit personal qualities. He:
- Knows the mind of God: 1 Corinthians 2:11.
- Can be grieved: Ephesians 4:30.
- Wills and distributes gifts to believers: 1 Corinthians 12:11.
- Guides God’s people into truth: John 16:13.
Jesus repeatedly referred to the Holy Spirit with the personal pronoun “He.” The Holy Spirit is as personal as God the Father and God the Son, and He deserves honor as well.
See the Holy Spirit at Work Throughout Scripture
The work of the Holy Spirit is woven throughout the biblical story. He was present in creation, Job 33:4 declares that the Spirit of God gives human beings life. He is not absent from the world He made.
The Holy Spirit also inspired the writers of Scripture. 2 Peter 1:21 teaches that prophecy did not originate in human will. Rather, people spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. This gives us real confidence in the Bible. It is not merely the product of human religious reflection. It is the Word of God.
Yet the work of the Holy Spirit does not stop with the writing of Scripture. He also illuminates Scripture for believers. 1 Corinthians 2:12 tells us that we have received the Spirit from God so that we may understand what God has freely given us.
The Holy Spirit does not call us away from God’s Word into confusion or speculation. He helps us understand, receive, and apply the truth God has revealed. He creates, inspires, and illuminates.
Appreciate the Holy Spirit’s Impact in the Life of Christ
Consider how active the Holy Spirit was in the life and ministry of Jesus. According to Luke 1:35, Jesus’ miraculous conception in Mary’s womb was by the Holy Spirit. At Jesus’ baptism, the Holy Spirit descended upon Him. Then the Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness, where He was tempted by the devil.
Matthew 12:28 teaches that Jesus performed miracles by the Spirit of God. Throughout Christ’s earthly ministry, the Holy Spirit was present and active.
The purpose was never to draw attention away from Christ. The Holy Spirit works to bring glory to Jesus. That is also the direction He gives to our lives. The Holy Spirit helps us know Christ, honor Christ, and live in a way that points others toward Christ.
That is a healthy guide for spiritual maturity. If something claims to be spiritual but consistently distracts from Jesus, minimizes biblical truth, or turns attention toward people, we need to be careful. The Holy Spirit glorifies Christ.
Seek the Giver Rather Than Chasing the Gifts
The Bible states clearly that the Holy Spirit gives gifts to believers. Those gifts are real, valuable, and necessary for ministry. But there is a danger when we become more preoccupied with the gifts than with the Giver.
1 Corinthians 12:7 says that spiritual gifts are given for the common good. They are not trophies. They are tools for service. God equips His people so that they can minister to one another and glorify Christ.
Prioritize pursuing a deeper relationship with God over pursuing recognition, position, or spiritual experiences. Every good and perfect gift comes from God, but the greatest gift is God Himself.
The Holy Spirit strengthens, guides, and leads believers in their relationship with the Father and the Son. His indwelling presence is not about making us appear impressive. It is about making us more faithful, more loving, and more useful in the work of ministry.
Welcome the Advocate and Spirit of Truth
In John 14:16-17, Jesus calls the Holy Spirit “another Advocate.” Some translations use the words Comforter or Helper. Each expression helps us see something of His ministry. The Holy Spirit comes alongside God’s people to help them, and Jesus says that He will be with them forever.
Jesus also calls Him the Spirit of truth. All truth originates with God, and the Holy Spirit communicates God’s truth. He inspired the prophets and helps believers understand the truth revealed in God’s Word.
Every Christian is indwelled by the Holy Spirit. This is not a special second level of grace reserved for a select group of believers. The Spirit’s presence belongs to every person who has come into relationship with Christ. As 1 Corinthians 12:13 teaches, all believers are baptized by one Spirit into one body.
That truth should bring assurance. You are not trying to earn the Holy Spirit’s presence through performance. God gives His Spirit as part of His gracious work of bringing people into fellowship with Himself.
Trust the Holy Spirit’s Work in the World
John 16:8-11 explains that the Holy Spirit convicts the world concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment. People need to understand the seriousness of sin, the righteousness of Christ, and the reality of God’s judgment.
This should shape how we pray and serve. We should pray for the Holy Spirit to work powerfully in our culture and through ministries that proclaim the gospel. Only God can open hearts and help people recognize how far they have wandered from Him.
We are called to surrender to Christ, but we do not carry the burden of changing hearts by ourselves. The Holy Spirit is already at work, convicting people and drawing attention to their need for God.
Let the Holy Spirit Shape Your Head, Heart, and Hands
Christianity involves the head, the heart, and the hands. The Holy Spirit ministers in every one of those dimensions.
- He shapes the head by revealing truth through Scripture and illuminating our minds to understand it.
- He shapes the heart by pouring God’s love into us and assuring us that we are God’s children, as Romans 5:5 and Romans 8:16 teach.
- He shapes the hands by equipping us with gifts for service and ministry.
The Holy Spirit is not merely someone to believe in as an abstract doctrine. He is a person to know and experience through a growing relationship with God. He reveals the truth that grounds our faith, fills our hearts with love for God, and equips us to serve.
Celebrate the gift God has given you in the Holy Spirit. Ask God to deepen your understanding of His Word, strengthen your love for Christ, and make your life useful in serving others. When the head, heart, and hands are surrendered to God, the Christian life becomes what it was always meant to be: a life shaped by the presence and power of the Holy Spirit.
