How Can I Know Religious Truth? A Practical Biblical Guide

How can I know religious truth? Truth shapes everything: how we see God, how we understand ourselves, how we handle guilt and fear, and where we place our hope for the future.

Pastor Kerry Decker of Compass Christian Church, serves as a life coach, author, and apologist. Working hard to help people navigate life’s challenges and better understand God. One of the most important places to begin is here: How can I know religious truth?

Our culture often treats spirituality as a matter of personal preference. You have your truth, I have mine, and nobody can really know what is true. But difficult questions do not mean all answers are equally correct. God has not left us guessing. He has made Himself known through His Word.

Begin with God’s Word as the Source of Truth

The first answer to how can I know religious truth is straightforward: know what God said. Before Jesus went to the cross, He prayed for His followers and asked the Father to sanctify them by the truth. Jesus made the foundation clear: God’s Word is truth.

The Bible is not simply a collection of inspirational sayings or ancient religious reflections. It is God’s revelation, given so that people can know Him, understand His purposes, and live faithfully.

Paul writes in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 that all Scripture is God-breathed and useful for:

  • Teaching us what is true
  • Rebuking sin and error
  • Correcting what is out of line
  • Training us to live righteously
  • Equipping us for every good work

That means biblical truth is useful. It promotes spiritual growth, brings direction to daily decisions, and prepares us to live for God in a confused world.

If you have been asking, how can I know religious truth?, do not begin with popular opinion, online arguments, or whatever feels most comfortable. Begin with the Bible.

Use Truth as Protection Against Spiritual Harm

God’s truth does more than inform us. It protects us. Scripture describes the Christian life as a spiritual battle, and Ephesians 6 calls the Word of God the sword of the Spirit.

A sword is not only defensive. It is also an offensive weapon. When temptation, accusation, false teaching, shame, or fear comes against you, God’s Word gives you something solid to stand on.

Understanding religious truth is not just reserved for philosophers and theologians. It is a daily-life question. False ideas have consequences. They can lead us into sin, hopelessness, fear, or a distorted picture of God.

Truth helps us recognize what is false. It keeps us from being carried along by spiritual trends or persuasive personalities who say what people want to hear.

Paul warned Timothy that a time would come when people would reject sound teaching and seek out teachers who would tell them exactly what their itching ears wanted to hear. That warning feels especially relevant today. A message can attract a crowd, fill an auditorium, sell books, and spread quickly online without being true.

Sound doctrine may not always be fashionable, but it never goes out of style with God.

Hold Fast to the Essential Truths

Another part of answering how can I know religious truth is recognizing that the Bible provides a basis for Christian unity. Christians may disagree on some secondary matters, but Scripture identifies truths that are not negotiable.

In Ephesians 4:4-6, Paul points to the shared essentials of the faith:

  • One body
  • One Spirit
  • One hope
  • One Lord
  • One faith
  • One baptism
  • One God and Father of all

Christian unity is not built by pretending that truth does not matter. It is built on continuing in the teaching of Christ. As 2 John teaches, those who run ahead and do not remain in Christ’s teaching do not have God. Truth matters because Jesus matters.

We need humility in areas where faithful Christians may see things differently. We cannot surrender the core truths of the gospel simply to make faith more acceptable or less demanding.

Study the Bible Carefully and Correctly

Knowing that the Bible is true does not remove the need to understand it properly. Paul instructed Timothy to do his best to present himself to God as an approved worker who correctly handles the word of truth.

That is a needed challenge for every believer. How can I know religious truth? Not by pulling verses out of context or using the Bible to defend opinions we already hold. We know truth by carefully studying what God actually said.

Approach Scripture with a teachable heart. Read passages in context. Notice who is speaking, who is being addressed, and what the larger passage is about. Compare Scripture with Scripture. Ask God for wisdom and be willing to let His Word correct you.

There is a difference between merely collecting Bible verses and allowing the Bible to shape your mind. The goal is not to win arguments. The goal is to be approved by God and formed by His truth.

Receive the Freedom That Comes Through Truth

Jesus said in John 8:32, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Truth provides us with freedom.

Truth in Christ can free us from shame and guilt. It can free us from constant self-condemnation and the crushing fear of rejection. It can free us from being controlled by the opinions and judgments of other people, or our own harsh judgment of ourselves.

God’s truth also gives hope. You do not have to live in fear of the future as though everything depends on your ability to control tomorrow. God is already there. He is able to care for what concerns you today and what will concern you in the days ahead.

This freedom is not permission to live however we want. Real freedom is the ability to live as God created us to live, free from the lies and bondage that keep us from Him.

Step 6: Put God’s Word Into Practice

James 1:22-25 gives a very practical answer to how we can know religious truth. Do not merely listen to the Word. Do what it says.

James compares a person who hears God’s Word but does not obey it to someone who looks in a mirror, walks away, and immediately forgets what he looks like. The mirror reveals what needs attention, but it cannot help if we refuse to respond.

God’s Word reveals where our lives need correction. Maybe there is sin to confess, forgiveness to extend, fear to surrender, a relationship to repair, or a promise from God that needs to be believed. Truth becomes deeply rooted when it is lived.

James says the one who looks intently into God’s perfect law that gives freedom, continues in it, and does what it says will be blessed. Hearing matters. Obedience matters too.

Make Bible Study a Consistent Part of Your Life

Make a practical plan to become acquainted with the Bible. We live in a day when access to Scripture and trustworthy Christian resources is greater than ever.

You can read the Bible in your own language, listen to it through an audio Bible, compare translations, use the YouVersion Bible app, learn through Christian podcasts, read helpful books, and sit under sound biblical teaching. There is really no reason to remain uninformed about what Scripture teaches.

The Bible contains 66 books written by about 40 authors over roughly 1,500 years under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Its two major sections reveal one unfolding story.

  • The Old Testament contains 39 books, written mostly in Hebrew. It tells the story of the Jewish people, God’s law, humanity’s fall, and the need for a Savior.
  • The New Testament contains 27 books, written in Greek. It reveals Jesus Christ, the fulfillment of God’s promises, and the life of His church.

The Bible tells us that God is the author of life, that He has been working throughout human history, and that He has reconciled people to Himself through Jesus Christ. It is not simply a book about ancient events. It is the Word of life and a guide for daily living.

Keep Seeking, Learning, and Living the Truth

You can know religious truth because God has spoken. Search the Scriptures. Learn the teaching of Christ. Test what you hear. Hold onto sound doctrine. Put God’s Word into practice.

You do not need to be an expert before you begin. Open the Bible, ask God to teach you, and take the next faithful step. As you grow in His Word, you will find truth that equips you, protects you, unites you with God’s people, and sets you free.

You can know religious truth. Dive into God’s Word, continue in it, and allow it to lead you to Jesus.
